Risa Binder Talks with PARADE in Preparation for The CMA Music Festival

By DR. NANCY BERK via PARADE

Emmy-nominated recording artist Risa Binder is hitting the stage in the town she loves this week and she’s got a new single, You Haul, in her back pocket for a little extra country punch. Binder will be performing at the CMA Music Festival in Nashville on June 9.

Catching some major attention in the music world (and an Emmy nomination) after her song Just Like That gained attention on the popular daytime soap General Hospital, Binder’s next EP, Nashville, would see plenty of playtime, paving the way for more touring and time in the recording studio.

We caught up with Binder for a little Q & A to find out more about her country music career and who she’s hoping to bump into at the CMA Music Fest.

As a singer/songwriter, what most inspires your work?
Simply waking up every morning inspires me. I love people, travel and great stories. Most of my songs are inspired by stories about me or friends of mine.

Touring and opening for country music legend Ronnie Milsap is certainly an honor and a nod to your talent. What have you learned from working so closely with a music icon?
I learned so much watching Ronnie and his band every night. I was honored to open for him, and [for] every night I got the opportunity to sing before him, I give thanks. They are truly a family onstage and off and I aspire to have my band always feel like my family as well. Ronnie’s songs are legendary, and each night I would have people come up to me after the show telling me about how certain Ronnie songs were the soundtrack to their lives. The best thing we can do as artists and songwriters is write a song that truly touches the hearts of the people listening.

You are notorious for your post-concert “Sweet ‘n Greets” with fans. What happens when you add cupcakes to this music tradition?
Ha ha! Yes. I love to have Sweet n Greets after my shows. It so fun to meet everyone and share a little sweet treat. It’s a great way to end the night. Cupcakes are always a hit. Especially the mini cupcakes. Yum!

Fans will be able to see you at Nashville’s 2017 CMA Music Fest. Besides your fans, are there any folks you’d love to bump into at the festival?
I am super-excited to perform at CMA Fest this year! We are playing at 4pm on Friday at The Gildan Broadway Stage right near the Hard Rock Cafe. I’m sharing the stage with great acts, and I would love to bump into Little Big Town, Thomas Rhett, and high five Dierks Bentley.

It can be difficult for artists to follow and realize their dreams. What advice do you have for those who are on the journey?
For me, the most incredible feeling is performing live and connecting with the crowd. I would tell other artists to get specific and know exactly what they want and where they want to go in the industry. Write it down. Place your goals where you can see them when you wake up and when you go to sleep. Then begin taking action each day, carving out your own beautiful path to get there. There is only one you. Keep creating. Keep writing. Keep sharing your story with the world.

What’s next for Risa Binder?
I just released my new single You Haul. It’s a fun party vibe breakup song. We are gearing up for a radio tour for the summer that starts June 12th. The video for You Haul is so fun and I can’t wait to share that with you, too!

Risa Binder Talks Music and Food With Battered And Brewed

Exclusive Interview with Emmy-Nominated Country Artist and Foodie, Risa Binder

June 6, 2017 - by MARY GRIFFITHS
via Battered and Brewed

Good Afternoon Risa! Thank you so much for talking with Battered and Brewed! What was a typical dinner or family meal like for you growing up in Maryland?
A typical dinner was something I always looked forward to growing up because my family of four ate together every night until I went to college! Meals were a way for us to connect. My mom is a great cook! She loves to host family events and for that I am thankful!

Do you have a signature dish you prefer to cook at home or rather go out to eat?I love both. I love cooking at home..right now i’m on a cauliflower crust pizza kick with grilled veggies. But I also love to go out to eat as well!

Do you have a playlist you like to listen to while you cook?
It always changes depending on my mood, but usually something I can dance around the kitchen to while I cook.

What are three things you can always find in your refrigerator?
Bell Peppers, Hummus, Dark chocolate (and at least 2 to 3 jars of applesauce at any time, simply because I always forget there is some already in the fridge).

If you had to pick one type of cuisine, what would you say is your favorite?
Thai at the moment! So many options. Tom Kha Gai Soup, Basil Chicken, I’m getting hungry just thinking about it!

What’s one food everyone tells you to try, but you just can’t get up the nerve.
The fried calamari that actually looks like a little octopus…I can’t

What can’t you control yourself around food wise?
Mac and cheese, chocolate, and popcorn

If you designed your own walking food tour of Nashville, which restaurants/food sellers would be on your list of places to visit?
I absolutely love how Nashville has become a culinary destination! There are so many places …I would do a walking tour of 12th South and showcase Edley’s (get the hot chicken nachos..they aren’t on the menu), The Flipside, and get a popsicle over at Las Paletas. I would have a separate breakfast and coffee tour that involved Fido, 5 Daughters, Crema, 3 Brothers, and then on Sunday, Hattie B’s Chicken & Waffles…You would definitely need a nap. Then start the evening at Salt & Vine with a glass of wine and a meat n’ cheese plate then roll on over to  Adeles’ (Kale Salad, actually basically anything there).

Then there’s Rolf & Daughters…I always feel like when I go there I want to stand up after my meal and do a “slow clap” and see if people just stand up and join me because the food there is so incredible. Butcher & Bee (Whipped Feta + all the veggies) …the list goes on and on…

Is there anywhere you have not been and are dying to go?
Yes! Henrietta Red, Eio & The Hive, and Slim & Husky’s

We love your Instagram! You are quite the culinary (and coffee) photographer! Has that always been a hobby of yours?
Thank You! I love Instagram. Yes, I think besides performing …my other “Happy Place” is having a meal with friends or even by myself and capturing it on camera. Also having a coffee in the morning is sometimes like my “thankful meditation.” I am thankful to have that warm cup of happiness to start my day and I want to document that.

Tell us about your newest single, “You Haul,” that was released June 2nd. What inspired you most when writing this song?
“You Haul” was a title I had for a while but wanted to wait until I was in the room with other writers who would find it funny and fun. I wrote it with Vanessa Oliverez and Karl Rybecki and it was a super fun write that turned out just like I imagined!! Everyone goes through breakups but wouldn’t it be fun it you could celebrate the breakup with a party? Thats what “You Haul” is about.

What was it like working and writing with Luke Wooten (Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley)?
I still can’t believe I get to work with Luke Wooten. I can’t believe that he is my friend. He is so great to work with…it’s a great collaboration…He gives you creative freedom and never let’s you give less than your best. I also appreciate his honesty if something could be better or needs tweaking.

You are an Emmy-Nominated artist and was just recently chosen to be a part of iHeartRadio / AT&T’s “About to Break” series. Congrats! What has that been like?
Going to iHeart Radio’s offices to sing live was a serious dream come true. They created a beautiful video that is my most favorite piece about my music journey so far! I am so excited to be a part of that series and super pumped to continue working with them!

You are gearing up to play CMA fest in downtown Nashville. Any restaurants/bars you would recommend to your fans who need a breather?
Yes! Can’t wait to play CMA Fest on June 9th at 4pm at the Gildan Broadway Stage which is right near the Hard Rock Cafe. If you need a breather downtown I suggest going to the rooftop of Acme Feed and Seed. They have a great menu! Merchants is also yummy. Or you could go to Jacks BBQ..so yummy!

Aside from your passion for food and music, what’s the one thing that really keeps you ticking?
Travel keeps me ticking. I love traveling and discovering new places. I’m definitely an urban adventurer.

Finally for Battered and Brewed, If you could eat or drink with one person dead or alive, who would it be and what would you have?
I would split a Hot Fudge Brownie Sundae with Reba.

KLAW Radio Featured Artist Risa Binder

It’s Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday and today we feature an artist who is drawing praise across the country, currently touring as the opening act for Ronnie Milsap’s farewell tour. This past Saturday night, she drew a standing ovation at the end of her set at the Sugar Creek Casino’s event center warming the audience up properly for Milsap.

Risa Binder is not your normal up-and-coming country singer. Born in raised in Columbia, MD, Binder took a detour through the country hot bed of Brooklyn, NY on her road to Nashville, a borough whose only other contribution to country music was Eddie Rabbitt. But much like it did for Rabbitt, it gave Binder that “New York toughness” that helps one survive the twists and turns of Nashville. Her time in the city didn’t dim the memories of a childhood running through farmlands and deserted barns, it simply honed the edges.

Performing seemed to always be in Risa’s blood, singing from an early age (as she says from the time she could talk) and then following both of her parents into the theater, which is where her love of country music flourished. As soon as she was old enough, Binder moved to Brooklyn to pursue her career, soon finding herself saving all of her money from waitressing to finance trips to Nashville, attending songwriter nights at the legendary Bluebird Cafe and immersing herself in the city’s sights and sounds.

Binder found herself one of the most popular new artists at the 2014 CMA Festiville in Nashville, signing a constant flow of autographs at the Farm Boy/Farm Girl brands booth. After every show she hosts a “Sweet and Greet” for fans, where she chats and signs autographs and serves her guests cupcakes or other treats procured from local vendors.

Risa has been out on tour in support of her debut EP Nashville, opening for such legendary acts as Milsap and James Taylor. The EP was produced by Luke Wooten, the noted producer who has worked with Brad Paisley, Dierks Bentley and Kellie Pickler. Her song “Just Like That” from the EP was nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Song in a Daytime Drama, after its prominent feature on the daytime drama General Hospital.

Binder and Wooten are currently in the studio on her off-days, working on her first full length album, a project that features songs from legendary Nashville writers Chuck Jones, Matraca Berg, Phil Barton, and more. The first single from the project is in our spotlight today. Risa Binder and “Pretty” is today’s Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday Catch of the Day, new music you haven’t heard, but you’ll want to hear it again.
